“As a campaigning social enterprise we put social justice and the public interest at the heart of all we do.”

After spending 10 years as an MSP and 9 as a councillor I saw first hand where power lies and in whose interest it is exercised.

At both a local and national level the big business community, the banks, financial institutions and developers dominate. They use their wealth and contacts to influence the policy agenda and where budgets are spent.

And all too often trade unions, charities and voluntary organisations are ignored, patronised or paid lip service to.

It was seeing this at close quarters that inspired me and my colleagues to establish Unity Consulting Scotland. We set up our social enterprise to help challenge the status quo by putting the public interest at the heart of all we do.

We wanted to use the skills and the knowledge we have gained to ensure that the voice of ordinary people is heard by decision makers and politicians.

Collectively we have over 40 years of experience in frontline politics, policy development, research and communications.

But we have no interest in working with the big business community or the banks or developers, instead we work with trade unions representing workers across the economy and charities and community groups doing vital work in our cities, towns and villages.

We provide a range of services to help advance their campaigns to make Scotland and the UK a fairer, more equal and just society.

And by doing so this allows us to provide pro bono services to small organisations we support and whose values we share.

Our services include:

  • Research and report writing

  • Campaign planning and strategy

  • Traditional and social media output

  • Parliamentary liaison

  • Policy development

  • Writing subject-specific briefings

  • Event planning

  • Training

As a campaigning social enterprise we put social justice and the public interest at the heart of all we do.

The last two years since our formation have been a whirlwind.

Whether it be researching and publishing major reports on the future of the railways and the fire service, the right to food and Universal Credit, organising the biggest ever demonstrations of Postal workers and Firefighters at the Scottish Parliament, signing up Zero Hours Justice accredited employers, establishing the Justice for Colombia Scotland supporters network or helping the Bakers, Food and Allied workers union recruit new members things have been full on and hugely rewarding.

And with a UK election around the corner 2024 looks like it will be an even busier year.

If you would like to speak to us about how we can help your organisation advance your campaigns then please do not hesitate to get in touch. We would be delighted to hear from you.
